Gender Differences in the Kinetics and Kinematics of Distance Running: Implications for Footwear Design
نویسندگان
چکیده
Interest in distance running amongst females has expanded rapidly. Although there are numerous health benefits associated with running, the occurrence of injury is well documented. Given the relative susceptibility of females to overuse running injuries, a key issue within the discipline of footwear biomechanics that has yet to be appropriately addressed is the specific demands of athletic footwear for females. The aim of this study was therefore to provide both a kinetic and 3-D kinematic comparison of male and female runners in order to determine the relative susceptibility of females to the proposed mechanisms of overuse injuries and whether based on this information, females require more specific footwear designs to meet their needs. Twelve male participants and twelve female participants’ completed five successful trials running at 4.0ms +5%. 3-D angular joint kinematics from the hip, knee and ankle were collected using an eight camera motion analysis system. In addition simultaneous tibial acceleration and ground reaction forces were obtained. Differences in impact parameters and joint kinematics were subsequently compared using independent samples t-tests. Females were found to be associated with significantly greater knee abduction, knee internal rotation and ankle eversion, whilst males were associated with significantly greater hip flexion. Based on these findings it is recommended that females select running footwear with design characteristics aimed towards the reduction of coronal plane ankle eversion in order to reduce the incidence of injury.

The Effects of Increasing Running Speed on Three-Dimensional Peak Angle of the Lower Limb Joints in Stance Phase
Objective: Attention can be paid to the biomechanical characteristics of running since the speed of running varies. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of increasing running speed on the three-dimensional kinematics of the lower limb’ joints in the stance phase. Methods: The research was quasi-experimental. 27 volunteer subjects ran on a treadmill and the kinematic and ...
متن کاملComparison of Minimalist Footwear Strategies for Simulating Barefoot Running: A Randomized Crossover Study
Possible benefits of barefoot running have been widely discussed in recent years. Uncertainty exists about which footwear strategy adequately simulates barefoot running kinematics. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of athletic footwear with different minimalist strategies on running kinematics. Thirty-five distance runners (22 males, 13 females, 27.9 ± 6.2 years, 179.2 ...
متن کاملEffects of Shoes on Kinetics and Kinematics of the Squash Forward Lunge in Male Players
Squash is associated with a high incidence of chronic injuries. Currently there is a trend in many sports for players to select minimalist footwear. The aim of the current investigation was to examine the effects of squashspecific, running shoes and minimalist footwear on the kinetics and 3-D kinematics of the lunge movement in squash players. Twelve male squash players performed lunge movement...
متن کاملModelling of Muscle Force Distributions During Barefoot and Shod Running
Research interest in barefoot running has expanded considerably in recent years, based around the notion that running without shoes is associated with a reduced incidence of chronic injuries. The aim of the current investigation was to examine the differences in the forces produced by different skeletal muscles during barefoot and shod running. Fifteen male participants ran at 4.0 m·s-1 (± 5%)....
متن کاملEffects of footwear midsole hardness on females' lower limb kinetics and kinematics during cutting manoeuvres.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is a common sport injury, especially in team sports where cutting manoeuvres are overriding. Women were more likely to have an ACL injury (Quisquarter et al 2013). Although a recent study by Nigg et al (2012) investigated the influence of midsole hardness on running kinematics across different populations, very little was known about female athlete kine...
